Portals 2024

Introducing Portals

A portal can be a large entrance, a grand and imposing doorway, or a futuristic passageway to another world. Besides being an opening to new places, portals can also serve as openings to new experiences and sensations. Maryland Federation of Art (MFA) asks artists to share their interpretations of portals – whether literal or metaphorical, and to share their artistic perspectives and representations of the concept of portals as they see it. Entry is open to all artists residing internationally. All original 2D or 3D artwork in any media is eligible for this online show. Works selected by the juror will be on display in MFA’s online gallery, Curve Gallery, from June 14 – July 31, 2024.

Juror: Giulia Livi: Multidisciplinary Artist & Educator

Giulia Piera Livi is an interdisciplinary artist working in painting and installation. Her immersive rooms employ hyper-cohesive color and abstract forms to work out ideas of multi-functional art objects and curated domesticity. She has exhibited both nationally and internationally with notable shows at the Delaware Contemporary Museum (Wilmington, DE), the Museum of Contemporary Art Arlington (Arlington, VA), Tiger Strikes Asteroid (Brooklyn, NY), Governor’s Island Art Fair (NY), Untitled Space (New York, NY), Mono Practice (Baltimore, MD), Guest Spot @ the REINSTITUTE (Baltimore, MD), Dream Clinic (Columbus, OH), VAE Gallery (Raleigh, NC), and Walter Otero Contemporary Art (San Juan, Puerto Rico). Giulia was granted fellowships to complete residencies at the Virginia Center for Creative Arts in 2023 and Vermont Studio Center in 2018. She received an Individual Artist Award from the Maryland State Arts Council in 2019, a Trawick Young Artist Prize from the Bethesda Contemporary Art Awards in 2017, and was included in Issue No. 148 of New American Paintings. Giulia is currently a part-time faculty at Pratt Institute (Brooklyn, NY) and MICA (Baltimore, MD).

What is a submission?

One submission or application on artcall.org is the equivalent of one entry on MFA’s old entry system, or one piece submitted for jurying. Artcall.org uses the terms submission and application interchangeably.

Can I edit my submissions after I've submitted them?

Artcall.org requires you to select the number of submissions / applications you want to enter and to pay before entering in your image and image details. You can edit your submission details along with images you've attached up until the submission period is over. Once the submission period has ended, you cannot edit their entries in any form.

Can I add more submissions after I've paid?

You must submit a separate submission / application for each piece of artwork you wish to be shown to the juror.  You have the option to add a second or third image of the same work to your submission / application as a detail photograph. This is not required.

What are the entry fees?

1 or 2 entries are $45 ($30 for MFA Members). Up to 4 additional entries are $6.75 each ($4.50 for MFA Members). Entry fees are non-refundable.
